What is a bath bomb?

If you thought your bath couldn't get any better, then you haven't tried a bath bomb yet! These fizzy little balls of fun amp up your tub time with color, fragrances, and skin benefits without introducing harmful synthetics that could possibly irritate your skin. Soaking in the bathtub allows moisture from the essential oils to absorb deep into your skin, providing you with a sense of smooth, silky softness.

Bath bombs help lock in moisture and hydrate your skin while giving your bath a lovely, multi-sensory experience. Who knew you could accomplish so much for your skin all while relaxing in the tub?!

So, what exactly makes a bath bomb so reactive when dropped into water? The answer is ... science! It's actually an acid-based reaction between the components of a bicarbonate base and citric acid. Once the bath bomb hits the water, the bicarbonate and citric acid release carbon dioxide gasses.

The carbon dioxide is what makes the bath bomb fizz and move around in the tub, mixing bubbles and gorgeous color around with it. Bath bombs can contain additional ingredients like essential oils, aromas, Epsom salt, or dried flower petals and herbs.

All these ingredients are then tightly hand-packed into a variety of shapes but are typically found in spherical form.

History of bath bombs

The invention of the bath bomb is one of those ideas that make you wonder, "Why didn't I think of that?!" The ingredients used are fairly easy to obtain and the outcome of using a bath bomb is enjoyable, so how did the inventor come across the idea that all of us know and love today?

A woman by the name of Mo Constantine was inspired by observing a dissolvable antacid tablet bubble and fizz its way through the water.

With sensitive skin in mind, Mo created a recipe that was not only beneficial for skin but also a fun alternative to liquid bubble baths, which can often contain ingredients may irritate some skin types.

People everywhere took this bath bomb idea and ran with it! Soon, ingredients like flower petals, glitter, oils, and fragrances were being packed into the bath bombs, appealing to all walks of life!

How to Use a Bath Bomb

Choosing a bath bomb is almost just as fun as using it! While browsing for your bombs, you'll find just about any size, shape, color, scent that will fit the mood you're in. Keep an open mind and explore your options! You never know what style of bath bomb set you'll end up falling in love with.

Using the bath bomb is as easy as it can get. Fill your tub with water that is at a comfortable temperature for you. Be sure to have anything you'll need within arms reach so you can stay put once you're in the tub. Grab your towel, book, a glass of wine, your headphones, or anything that will make your bath most relaxing.

Once the tub is full, drop the bomb in the water and enjoy the show! You'll see the bomb fizz and bubble and swirl around the tub leaving colorful trails of skin-loving oils and salts behind it.

It's your choice if you want to get in the tub while the bath bomb is still fizzing or if you'd rather wait until it's completely dissolved. Either way, ease your way to relaxation as your skin absorbs all the benefits your bath bomb has provided.

It may be a good idea to hop in the shower for a quick rinse off, especially if you've used a bomb with glitter or lots of colors. Also, remember to clean your tub as the surface might to too slippery for the next person who takes a bath. Giving a quick wipe down will also free your tub of flower petals or dyes the bath bomb may have left behind.

It's important to remember that the fresher your bath bomb is, the better it will work. Try not to wait several months after you bring it home. Bath fizzies are great for children that have a hard time relaxing before bed!

CAN YOU USE A BATH BOMB MORE THAN ONCE?

It's recommended that you use the entire bath bomb just one time in order to get the complete effects of it. Cutting a bath bomb in half while it's dry will give you another chance in using it, but your bath experience might not be as exceptional as it would be if you were to use the entire bath bomb.

Under no circumstances should you take a bath bomb out of the water after it has fizzed and save it in a baggie for next time. Doing so may harbor unwanted bacteria and reintroduce it into your next bath.
